Interview with Esse Vie

I am grateful to have a fair few friends who have created their own brands. Handbags, kimonos, swimwear and now beautifully cut basics with a twist in staple colours and silhouettes. Say hello to Esse Vie created by a particularly stylish friend Sonam Vaswani. Sonam has always had an effortless approach to dressing which is clearly translated into her designs. She answered a few of my nagging questions to give us all a little more insight into her brand.

What inspired you to create Esse Vie?

The conception of Esse Vie came from the frustration of not finding clothes which suited my body shape. High street or high end, the conventional designing method is centred around styles created for sample sizes, often these styles and designs are not as flattering on the body as sizes are graded upwards. I set out to create a brand which focused on styles which suited a curvy body and reversed the sizing and grading process, as a result women from UK6 to UK14 are finding the styles flattering on their body shape and sizes.

Who is the Esse Vie woman?

The Esse Vie woman is someone who lives a healthy and balanced life yet embraces her feminine curves. Despite a healthy lifestyle some women do not have a body shape of a mannequin, the Esse Vie woman has accepted and embraced it.

What inspires your designs?

Absolutely anything can inspire me. Unlike designers, my main focus is to not create style which are simply aesthetically beautiful but to create designs for a real woman. I often focus on problematic areas such as a larger bust, wider hips or upper arms. I love finding ways of concealing certain areas whilst enhancing others whilst using fabrics which drape the body well.
