My summer always starts with some downtime. Pyjama days spent with family, reruns of Gilligan’s Island and hours perusing where Lindsay Lohan spent her Saturday night on the Daily Mail. Downtime is the perfect way to decompress from the stresses and monotony of daily life and also incorporate a few extra steps into your beauty routine to ensure that when you’re finally ready to step out from hibernation you look like you’re ready to spend the summer drinking rose next to the Byblos swimming pool.
Adding a morning juice to your day will help improve your skin and nails. It’s an easy and painless step to fill up on greens (this also works great as a snack instead of reaching for something that will cause unsightly lumps and bumps in an unforgiving Agent Provocateur bikini). My current favourite recipe is:
1 tsp chia seeds
1 tsp ground flax seeds
1 handful frozen kale
1 handful frozen berries (or peaches)
1 handful Swiss chard
1 serving green powder (try a great one here)
1 handful ice cubes
almond milk/coconut water/filtered water
1/2 banana (optional)
This is a great basic recipe that you can play around with and add your favourite veggies or fruit (just make sure to keep fruit to a single serving especially if you’re using coconut water).
As far as fitness is concerned I make sure to up the cardio when I have the time. In addition to my usual routine, an extra thirty minutes of cardio each day can really make all the difference. Whether it be a brisk walk to Starbucks or a rigours date with a jump rope, squeezing in a little boost (along with reducing sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol) will result in a tighter, slimmer body for a perfectly impractical La Perla bikini.
Adding in some night treatments will leave your skin clear and radiant. Create a buffet of products and switch it up each night. I like to alternate between using a highly concentrated oil to moisturise and a night treatment with lactic acid or retinol to smooth out my skin and erase any imperfections. Sisley’s Black Rose Precious Face Oil is still my OOC (oil-of-choice). It doesn’t feel like you’re blocking all your pores and bracing yourself to wakeup to skin that would even leave a hormonal 13 year old quaking with fear. It leaves skin beautifully soft and nourished without leaving a greasy residue. Other than that Sunday Riley has been one of my top discoveries the past year; try Good Genes or Luna Sleeping Night Oil and be prepared to wakeup with the clearest, luminous complexion you have ever seen.
I also make sure to bump up my morning skincare routine by using a serum before my moisturiser. La Mer’s Regenerating Serum has made a noticeable difference to the texture of my skin and has practically eliminated all discolouration. This will plump the skin and create a beautiful even surface that doesn’t need a lick of makeup.
Never ever use heat on your hair unless it’s a total necessity. If you’re hanging out at home with your parents, they’ll forgive you for turning your back on poker straight hair and adopting a high pony-tail. Giving your hair a temporary break and using an arsenal of strengthening and replenishing products makes the world of difference. Firstly I like to clarify my hair using apple cider vinegar. Mixing one part apple cider vinegar with one part warm, filtered water apply all over your hair after shampooing and leave for a minute or two. Whilst this won’t smell like a summer meadow it will remove all excess product and build up you may have lingering on your hair and scalp, it also creates shine leaving hair soft and silky.
Conditioning should be your top priority when it comes to your hair during downtime. Either applying coconut oil on the ends and massaging your scalp (leave this in over night) or stocking up on your favourite treatments (like Rita Hazan’s Weekly Remedy). I currently have my ends soaked in Josie Maran’s Argan Oil in preparation for my morning shower which leaves my hair smooth with a glass-like shine.
Try incorporating Biotin or Omega supplements into your daily routine, you hair skin and nails will thank you in the long run. I have noticed a huge difference in the thickness, quality and feel of my hair (which has started to grow like there’s no tomorrow).
